M.Sc (Forensic Science)

Forensic experts are independent professionals with degrees or their equivalents in a wide range of scientific disciplines. They work closely with the police to provide scientific evidence that is admissible in court.

The following universities offer MSc in forensic science and/or criminology. You can work in any of the for Central and 24 State-run forensic labs in the country besides police departments, prison administrations, detective and private security agencies and NGO's.

Forensic Scientists are appointed by the Union and State Public Service Commissions.

Each Forensic Lab has a separate physics, chemistry, toxicology, ballistic, serology, documentation, finger printing, photography, polygraphy ( lie detection) division where lab tests are run on trace evidence collected from dead / live people.

Because of the heavy backlog of cases, there is a proposal to introduce mobile forensic units in some states, which would further boost the demand for forensic scientists.

  • Osmania University, Hyderabad (AP) MSc Forensic Sc. Eligibility :BSc (45% in optional subjects.
  • Karnatak University, Dharwad (Kar). Course : MA in Criminology & Forensic Sc. Eligibility : Bachelor's degree (45%).
  • University of Mysore, Mysore (Kar) Course : MA (Criminology& Forensic Sc.) Eligibility: Bachelor's degree.
  • University of Madras, Chennai (TN) Courses : MSc (Forensic Sc.) ; MSc (Forensic Toxicology) Eligibility : BSc/MBBS/BDS/BPharm/BVSc ; MA (Criminology). Eligibility: BA/ BSc / BCom.
